The progression of the 6 th Army was therefore very slow, because the advance could no longer be measured in kilometers, but in meters. Fighting took place all over the city. The determination and courage shown by the Russian soldiers surprised the Germans and the Soviet artillery, on the eastern bank of the Volga, constantly harassed them.
